Trying to teach a gifted child to "regroup" in subtraction: (I still call it 'borrowing', but whatever)
The problem is 5235 - 1726 = ?
Aiden: This doesn't make sense.
Mom: Okay, well, start with the ones and then move to the tens, hundreds, and thousands, okay?
Aiden: It won't work.
Mom: It works. (pointing to the ones column) What is 5 minus 6?
Aiden: Negative one.
Mom: Well, not in 3rd grade it isn't.

Sounds familiar! We dealt with the same stuff w/Rylie last year. I usually turned math over to Josiah though...he somehow has a way of explaining things in a way that makes sense to her.

Send the kid to Washington! Let him teach the government the consequences of deficit spending. "It doesn't make sense" is exactly right. What a brain! I suddenly feel optimistic about the future.
